Reflection Stories | Volume 1 | Story 10

The Candle in the Storm

When the village lost electricity during a storm, people shut their doors and waited in darkness. In one small house, a widowed mother lit a single candle. Its flame was small, almost fragile, but it warmed the room just enough for her children not to be afraid.

The youngest asked, "Will one candle be enough?"

The mother replied, "It cannot remove the whole night, but it can stop this room from becoming dark."

Years later that child remembered those words during a painful season of life. He had wanted to solve every problem around him: poverty, sorrow, conflict, loneliness. He felt too small to make any difference.

Then he remembered the candle.

So he began small. He visited a sick neighbor. He spoke kindly to a hurting friend. He forgave someone who never apologized. He offered what light he had.

Reflection

And slowly he discovered a mystery: God does not ask each of us to be the sun. Sometimes He asks us only to be a faithful candle.
